The most important factor to consider when looking for a bonsai pot, is to look at the depth of the pot and to ensure it has drainage holes or wiring holes so that the tree can be fixed to the pot. A general rule, when decided on the size of your pot, is that it should be of the same height as the trunk is wide above the nebari (also known as root flare).
What kind of pots are best for bonsai?
Bonsai pots can be made out of ceramic, plastic or porcelain so you’ve got plenty of options. The one thing that’s important to consider is the depth. Bonsai pots are traditionally shallow to allow sufficient drainage and keep the tree confined to a small size.
Do Bonsai Pots Need Drainage Holes?
Yes, bonsai pots need at least one drainage hole to ensure water doesn’t sit in the pot. Bonsai trees are planted in a constrained environment which means they need proper drainage in order to prevent root rot.
Why Do Bonsai Have Shallow Pots?
The contained roots and limited amount of soil is what makes bonsai trees grow slower, which is why bonsai trees are often planted in the traditional shallow pots. In addition the shallow pot creates a sense of harmony between the tree and its container, creating a more cohesive look. As a general rule of thumb when choosing a bonsai pot, the depth of your pot should be equal to the root diameter right above soil level.
