Bonsai Tree Watering

Bonsai watering is an extremely important factor when it comes to the overall health and growth of your tree. Water cycle may be different for different bonsai and it depends on various factors. For example, the size of the bonsai pot, the time of year, soil mixture, and the climate. These are the main things to consider when it comes to watering your bonsai. There are, however, a few basic guidelines you can follow.

If you feel that the soil is dry, you should water your bonsai tree. When watering your bonsai, you should make sure that the entire root system is soaked with water. There are two ways to do this – by watering until water starts coming out of the drainage holes, or soaking your tree in a water-filled tray. BONSAI WATERING – FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

As a beginner bonsai enthusiast it’s normal to have many questions about watering your bonsai tree. Below you can find the answers to some of the questions we get asked most frequently.

How to water my bonsai tree?

There is no right or wrong technique for watering a bonsai tree as long as your tree gets the amount of water it needs. Generally most people prefer one of the two common ways for bonsai watering.

Probably the most common way of watering a bonsai tree is watering it like any other plant by pouring water into the pot. To ensure that enough water is getting to the roots of your tree thoroughly water the soil until water starts to run out of the drainage holes at the bottom of your pot.

The second popular watering method is filling in another tray with water, and placing the bonsai on top of it. This allows the roots to directly soak up the water, so once the water has disappeared, you can place your bonsai back on its original tray to dry out a bit.

How often to water my bonsai tree?

It’s hard to water a bonsai on a schedule because every tree has a different water cycle. It’s also not recommended to do that as bonsai trees may require different amounts of water during the different seasons.

The general rule of thumb is to water your bonsai whenever the soil starts to feel dry and ensure it’s well watered. A good way to check if your bonsai needs to be watered is by testing the soil with your finger. If it feels dry, then give your bonsai some water!

What to water my bonsai tree with?

You can use a small watering can or a hose to water your bonsai tree Although you have to be careful as too much pressure on the tree could potentially harm it. You can buy watering cans specifically for bonsai trees and it is a worthwhile investment if you’re going to be taking care of various trees and plants.

What time of day should I water my bonsai?

You can water your bonsai at any time of the day if it needs water and you have checked the soil yourself to determine if it’s dry. A general rule is to never water your bonsai tree when it is exposed to significant heat/sun. This is because the sun will immediately dry it out and cause further harm. You should also avoid giving your bonsai too much water if you’re keeping it outside and it’s cold. The roots might not be able to absorb the excess water straight away and freeze which will damage and potentially kill your tree.
